Funny Things I've Heard

Like any household, we have developed our own peculiar ways of doing things.  Families seem to develop their own little traditions and routines.  One of the funniest areas that I have noticed this effect in my home is in the things we say.  Let me illustrate with four funny words or exclamations that you will hear should you come by for a visit.

Piglet!
This one has to go first, because we all use it all the time.  This is our general-purpose non-cuss-word exclamation, noun, and adjective.  We call anyone who is misbehaving in any way a piglet.  We say that anyone who is whining about something while they do it is a piglet.  And when we step into the kitchen and see broken glass all over the floor, we will often say: "Oh, piglet!"  It's an all-around awesome word!  When we use it around other people out of habit, we usually get some pretty funny looks...

Pause!
My kids, from youngest to oldest all use this word to indicate they need to do something else and they will be right back.  Games, shows, or even conversations can all take a break when one of my children shouts this word out as if it had magical powers or something.  What's funny is all of the other kids act as if it does!  This is obviously a result of them being such heavy computer users (more like gamers, but let's be positive here).  I'm sure that other families have seen their kids act in the same way, because their friends intuitively understand what this means and act accordingly.  Cool.

Fooyf! 
I invented this word about ten years ago.  It's actually an acronym that stands for "Fingers Out Of Your Face".  Yes, we wanted a clever and clandestine way to instruct our kids to not pick their noses in public.  Guess what?  The word really took off in terms of everyone using it in the home, but everyone turns to see what the heck we just said whenever we use it in public.  So it fails in actual practice for what I hoped it would do, since more people see the inappropriate behavior, not less.  Piglet.  (See how handy that one is?) 

Flusterated
This is a very descriptive word that we made up for mostly use as parents.  It's a mash of the two words, "Frustrated" and "Flustered".  When we get so annoyed that we can't really think clearly, then we are flusterated.  Using the word with each other actually takes the tension down a notch or two as we both smile at the silliness of the word.  Thank goodness Tiffany and I have a working sense of humor!  It helps being parents so much!

And with that, let me say that I hope anyone in your house will pause their fooyfs so you can have a day with no flusterated piglets.
